Product Description
Andy designed this cabinet for a client who wanted to cut down on clutter at the bedside as well as have a tabletop for a lamp and other bedside necessities. The case is made from hard maple, then finished with milk paint on the exterior. Hand-cut dovetails join the corners of the case, and the top sports pegged, breadboard ends. It took some experimentation and a few mockups to nail the design of the drop-down door, which swings on hand-wrought hinges made by local blacksmith Matt Waldrop of Northern Crescent Iron. A sturdy, shop-made metal stop allows the door to open at precisely 90 degrees. Flip the door up and hidden magnets hold it in place, letting you stash books and magazines on the fly. A turnbuckle locks the door for added security. Below are two generous drawers, joined with sliding dovetails and fitted with bookmatched, solid-wood bottoms. Hand-dovetailed bracket feet support the case for an authentic touch. The case and drawer interiors are finished with several coats of shellac, then waxed to bring out a pleasing sheen. Outside, the ‘black-on-red’ color scheme combines two hues of traditional milk paint to provide a ‘black cherry’ finish. For protection and long life, the painted surfaces receive several coats of oil and a final topcoat of urethane.
The cabinet measures 20″ d. x 36″ w. x 36″ h.
